What function do the other planets perform?
A Biblical Perspective on Mankind, the Universe, and the
Gospel
Do aliens fit in there?
A. The Bible teaches that Mankind and the Earth are unique
1) Implied Uniqueness: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" [Genesis 1:1]. It does NOT say, "In the beginning God created the heavens including the earth." In fact, the Bible separates the earth as not part of "the heavens", because it is unique in God's creative and redemptive plan. Here in the creation account, the Bible sets the earth apart as special versus all of the rest of creation.
2) Stated Uniqueness of intelligent life on earth:a) "The highest heavens belong to the LORD, but the earth he has given to man." [Psalm 115:16]
b) "[God] created the heavens...he fashioned and made the earth, He founded it [the earth] He did not create it [the earth] to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited" [Isaiah 45:18]
c) Eve is the mother of all the living [Genesis 3:20]
B. The purpose of the stars, sun, and moon, and other planets [click here for more details]
"The Bible says that the stars, sun, moon, and planets were created for us---they have a purpose---they did not randomly evolve"
1) To serve as signs to mark the seasons, days, and years [Genesis 1:14] for life here on earth
2) To give light upon the earth [Genesis 1:15, 17]
3) To "govern" the day and the night [Genesis 1:18]--to provide consistent markers, giving order to creation
4) To separate light from darkness [Genesis 1:18]--to show visually here on earth, the distinction between the two
5) To declare the glory of God [Psalm 19:1-6]
6) To cause us to praise Him [Psalm 136:3-9]
7) To reveal His attributes to mankind, and to draw mankind to call upon Him [Romans 1:20; 10:18]

C. The Uniqueness of Mankind on Earth and the gospel message
1) Sin has corrupted ALL of creation to decay and death [Romans 8:19-22; 5:12]
a) If the aliens are sinLESS, then their corruption to decay and death would not be just. This would undermine the justice of God.
2) Jesus' sacrifice on the cross was to reconcile ALL of creation to Himself, including things in the heavens... "For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through His blood, shed on the cross." [Colossians 1:19-20]
Objection: Many people will quote John 10:16 where Jesus says, "I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also." They say that Jesus here is referring to aliens whom Jesus would later visit and take the gospel message to them.
Objection answered: Jesus is referring to the Gentiles here. He says that "there shall be one flock and one shepherd." [John 10:16], as it is written in Ephesians 2:11-19. The Bible teaches that Jews and Gentiles are one church by faith in Jesus. Both are sheep from different sheep pens [Jew vs Gentile] but are now one under Him.3) Jesus died only ONE time for all creation. There is no other sacrifice for sin. There is no other gospel to how a sinner's sin can be paid for. "For Christ died for sins once for all..." I Peter 3:18
a) If the aliens are SINNERS, and if Jesus is their Savior...then what is the gospel message for them? Should they believe upon a man from a distant planet [Earth!] who died for their sins??? Are we then to find a way to reach every sentient [intelligent] being in the Universe to bring the gospel message to them?? Would Jesus have given us a charge to "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation." [Mark 16:15] if we were physically and technologically unable to ever meet even one of those aliens?? Did Jesus mean "every planet in the universe with sentient life" when He said "all creation"? Or did He mean "all the earth"?

Belief in alien intelligent life:
1)
Undermines the gospel
2) Undermines Scripture by detracting from earth's unique position in God's plan
[Revelation 21and 22: "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth,...the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God...The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city."]
3) Undermines man's unique status, and therefore minimizes
his purpose, his reason for existing
4)
Distracts
the evangelist [should we pour our resources
into finding those aliens who need the gospel???]
5) Promotes yearning for a "technological Savior"--i.e. "If we can find those highly advanced aliens, they may be able to help us with our problems"--JESUS IS OUR SAVIOR AND THE ANSWER TO OUR PROBLEMS, BOTH LARGE AND SMALL
