Intelligent life on other planets??
At one time I FIRMLY believed that intelligent life did and currently does exist on other planets. I believed this because I was taught that it was true and because logic seemed to show that it MUST be true. With all of those stars and planets out there, statistically speaking, there had to be life out there somewhere. Let me share with you the assumptions and beliefs that lead to the conclusion that there is life out there.
Assumptions and
beliefs that lead to conclusion of extraterrestrial life:
1) We evolved by chance and random events. Therefore, statistics would nearly
mandate that the same or similar events happened elsewhere in the cosmos.
2) We are not unique. If God did indeed create us, He also
must have created [or evolved] other intelligent life on other planets.
3) Scientists that conclude that there must be extraterrestrial
life are unbiased by their own beliefs and analyze the existing data
to come to reasonable conclusions.
Answers to these assumptions:
1) We did NOT evolve by chance events. We are the workmanship of a Creator.
The second law of thermodynamics holds that all things are decaying. Consistent
evolutionary upwards migration bucks this law. The Bible also clearly declares
that God created everything. Since we were created, there is no need to
be bound by "statistics", but by what the Bible says.
2) We are indeed unique. The Bible places mankind as the
crowning event of God's creative week. The gospel message is that we as
sinners must receive
Jesus as Savior to be cleansed from our unrighteousness. The Bible says that
Jesus died to reconcile ALL creation to Himself. If there indeed are other
intelligent life forms on other planets, then they would have to be either
sinless, and in no need of a Savior....or they would need a Savior who died
on some distant planet they had never heard of, and never would hear of.
We know that there are no sinless people since the Bible says that all of
creation is "groaning" in decay due to sin. If they were subject
to decay and yet sinless, there would be no justice. The Bible also says
that ALL
have sinned. And Jesus died ONCE for ALL. Therefore, it is unbiblical to
conclude that He would go and die on another planet for sinners.
3) Scientists that conclude that intelligent life exists elsewhere are doing
so based not upon POSITIVE evidence, but upon a lack of contradictory evidence.
In other words they would say that until all planets are examined and shown
to be lifeless, we cannot know that life doesn't actually exist out there.
So the assumption is that life indeed DOES exist out there and has yet to be
found.
Here is an example of this reasoning:
“In recent
years nearly 100 planets have been discovered in orbits around other stars,
but none of these 'exoplanets'
remotely resembles
the Earth. However, according to the latest computer simulations by Barrie
Jones and Nick Sleep (The Open University), millions of Earthlike worlds
could be scattered throughout the Galaxy, just waiting for telescopes to
improve sufficiently for us to find them”

God created the heavens for His glory [Psalm
19] and His Power is made known in them.
The Bible
also teaches that we are unique in God's sight. Belief in intelligent life
on other planets undermines
the weight of the gospel message.
