The Christology of Job
Jesus Christ in the book of Job
I. God is Spirit and is invisible (John
4:24; Col. 1:15; 1Tim 1:17; Heb 11:26-27)
and Jesus came as God incarnate, in the flesh, and was visible (1John 1:1-4)
Jesus Christ in Job:
Job 23:2-5: “If only I knew where to find him” (invisibility
of God)
Job 10:4-5: “Do you have eyes of flesh?” (Can God be in the flesh?)
Job 9:32: “For He is not a man, as I am, that I should answer Him”
Jesus Christ in Job:
Job 42:5: “”…but now my eyes have seen you”
II. Jesus Christ was crucified and crushed for our iniquities
(Isaiah 53, Psalm 22, Matt 26:66—27:54, John 19:31-37)
Jesus Christ in Job:
Job 16:10-13: “..jeer at me…strike my cheek…pierces my kidneys
and spills my gall on the ground.”
Job 17:6: “…a man whose face people spit.”
Job 19:9: “stripped me of my honor and removed the crown from my head.”
III. Jesus Christ is our redeemer, intercessor, and mediator
Redeemer: (Gal 3:13-14; Gal 4:4-5; Titus 2:13-14)
Jesus Christ in Job:
[Job 9:2; Job 25:4: (human sin separates us from God)]
Job 19:25: “I know that my Redeemer lives, and that
in the end he will stand upon the earth.”
“Go-el”—kinsman-redeemer. See Ruth. The duty of the kinsman-redeemer was this: suppose an Israelite had alienated his estate, was losing it to poverty. It was the goel’s business to pay the price, as the next of kin, to buy back the heritage. Our life, and our body has been lost due to spiritual poverty. We are powerless to do anything to buy it back. But our Great Kinsman-Redeemer, Jesus Christ, has bought back our life, and our bodies by paying a price that we could never pay.
Mediator: ( Hebrews 8:6, 9:15, 12:24, 1Tim 2:5) Greek: mesites
Jesus Christ in Job:
Job 9:33-35: There is no umpire between us, who may lay his hand upon us both. Let Him remove His rod from me, and let no dread of Him terrify me. Then I would speak and not fear Him; But I am not like that in myself. (NASB)
If only there were someone to arbitrate between us, to lay his hand upon us both, someone to remove God’s rod from me, so that his terror would frighten me no more. Then I would speak up without fear of him, but as it now stands with me, I cannot. (NIV)
Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both. Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me: Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me. (KJV)
“mesites” (septuagint)—“mediator”Job 33:23-24: If there is an angel as mediator for him, one out of a thousand, to remind a man what is right for him, then let him be gracious to him, and say, ‘Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom’ (NASB)
Yet if there is an angel on his side as a mediator, one out of a thousand, to tell a man what is right for him, to be gracious to him and say, ‘Spare him from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom for him’ (NIV)
If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to show unto man his uprightness; Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom. (KJV)
"angelos"…(Septuagint)---angel or messenger
mal’ak…(Hebrew)---angel or messenger
In the NIV, mal’ak is translated 107 times as angel(s)
83 times as messenger(s)
-----See Genesis 16, and Exodus 3, where it is clear that the
“angel” is Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is the Great Messenger of the Covenant, and The Great Interpreter between God and man. A messenger does not come in his own name, but is sent. An interpreter must understand two languages, such as that of God and of man. “One out of a thousand” is the use of a finite number to describe the infinite.
Intercessor/advocate: (Rom 8:34; Heb 7:24-25; Isaiah 53:12)
Jesus Christ in Job:
Job 16:19-21: Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my advocate is on high. My friends are my scoffers; My eye weeps to God. O that a man might plead with God as a man with his neighbor! (NASB)
Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high. My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; on behalf of a man he pleads with God as a man pleads for his friend. (NIV)
Also now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my record is on high. My friends scorn me: but mine eye poureth out tears unto God. O that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleadeth for his neighbour! (KJV)
V. Jesus Christ will return to the Earth (Zech 14:4-6; Matt 24:30)
Jesus Christ in Job:
Job 19:25: “As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last
He will take His stand on the earth.” (NASB)
“
I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end He will stand upon the
earth.” (NIV)
“
For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter
day upon the earth.” (KJV)
Applications:
For me, I find it exciting to look for Jesus in the Scriptures,(there are
a whole lot more “red letters” in my bible than I had thought) but
I realized that:
The Scriptures are intended to drive us to Jesus:
John 5:39; “You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that
by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about
me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.”
Luke 24:28; 32:; “And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained
to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself……..they
asked each other, ‘were not our hearts burning within us while he talked
with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?’
God’s name is I AM, because: When we are lost, HE IS the way. When we
are confused, HE IS the truth. When we are dead in sins, HE IS the life. HE
IS mercy. HE IS grace. HE IS long-suffering. HE IS joy. HE IS peace. HE IS
love. HE IS everything we will ever need.
The Scriptures are also intended to spur us on to live our life for Jesus,
and put His words into practice:
1Corinthians 13:2-3: “If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all
mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains,
but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender
my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.”
