Answering a Mormon
What about Psalm 82:6; "I said you are gods..."??
he
Bible says that there are no other gods equal to God Elohim Almighty. The
only
other “gods” are
not equal to the Almighty, and would include:
1) satan [known
as the “god” of
this age],
2) idols that people worship [the New Testament
calls these “so
called gods”] and
3) people to whom the word of God was given.
We must remember:
Isaiah 44:6; "I
am the first and I am the last apart from me there is no God.”
Isaiah 46:9; "I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like me."
Isaiah 43:10; "Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me."
Isaiah 45:21-22; "...there is no God apart from
me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none but me. Turn to me and be
saved, all you ends of the
earth; for I am God, and there is no other."
Now
we know that God does not lie, nor contradict Himself, so if he calls people “gods”,
and yet says there is no other God, then what is He saying?
Other "gods", though they have authority, are inferior to the
Only God:
In other passages, the word “god” [we use the lower case here
because of the context it is found in] is used to describe those that have
authority over people in certain circumstances. Satan is called the “god
of this age” and yet we know he is not GOD!!! Satan has some control
over people during this age. Idols have control over people that relinquish
their control to them, and people that worship them call them their “gods”.
But of course they are not equal to God Almighty! They are but wood and silver!!!
Finally the judges were given control over the people in the Old Testament,
and were entrusted with the Torah [the Law]. God Almighty used the term “gods” to
describe them. Look at the very next verse;
Psalm 82:7; “But you will
die like mere men; you will fall like every other ruler.” God
says that although you are “gods”, you are really just mere men! Although
we have been entrusted with the Word of God, we must remember that we are
mere men [and women]. Jesus quoted
this psalm in John 10:34. Jesus used this psalm to actually
show how special and different He is from the rest of us MERE MEN!
Some people may be getting caught up on the use of the word “god” in
this psalm and equating that with equality with Almighty God. But remember: “apart
from me there is no God” and:
I Corinthians 8:5; “For even if there are so-called “gods”,
whether in heaven or on earth [as indeed there are many “gods” and
many “lords”] yet for us there is but ONE God, the Father, from
whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus
Christ, through whom all things come and through whom we live."
I hope that you will see that God Almighty was not formed from other Gods, and that there were no other Gods before Him. Our God is uncreated! And although we may be “gods” in the sense that we have been given some authority, we are but mere men and will fall like every other ruler, and we need to come to the one and only TRUE God, the UNCREATED GOD to ask Him for forgiveness of our sins. If you are a Mormon, you may have known about God for a long time, but I am telling you about the true God, who is uncreated. Come to Him today!
