How to answer a Mormon

What did Joseph Smith say about God as Creator?
quote from Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith
compiled by Joseph Fielding Smith (1876-1972)
Mormon Apostle; ordained 1910
Mormon Church historian and author of "Doctrines of Salvation"

The founder of the LDS church stated emphatically that God did not create everything out of nothing, but that He re-organized pre-existing matter into everything we now see and that matter itself is eternal.

"Now, I ask all who hear me, why the learned men who are preaching salvation, say that God created the heavens and the earth out of nothing? The reason is, that they are unlearned in the things of God, and have not the gift of the Holy Ghost."
--Joseph Smith; compiled by Joseph Fielding Smith, Teachings, p. 350.

The Bible says:

God made everything out of nothing:
"Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear." [Hebrews 11:3, KJV]

"By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible." [Hebrews 11:3; NIV]

Jesus, being the Creator [with the Father and the Spirit], existed before all material things:
"For by Him [Jesus] all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together." [Colossians 1:16-17; NIV]

"And He is before all things" [Colossians 1:17; KJV]

"Kai autos estin pro panton" [Colossians 1:17; Greek New Testament]; the Greek word "pro" means to come before, to antecede.

If the God of the Bible created everything we see out of nothing, then who is the god of Mormons??
